Technical SEO audit checklist: what I check first

The order I use to audit a site: crawl, indexation, rendering, speed, structured data and internationalization.

A good audit is not a long list of warnings. It is a short list of the problems that actually limit growth, in the order to fix them. This is the sequence I follow.

1. Can search engines reach the site?

Check robots.txt, status codes, redirects and server errors. Confirm important pages return 200, redirects are single-step and permanent where they should be, and nothing valuable is blocked.

2. Is the right content indexed?

Compare what you want indexed with what Google reports in Search Console. Look for pages excluded by noindex, canonical conflicts, soft 404s and duplicates. Large catalogs need special attention to faceted navigation and parameters.

3. Is the site structure clear?

Review internal linking, click depth and orphan pages. Important pages should be a few clicks from the home page and linked with descriptive anchors.

4. Does it render properly?

Fetch pages as a crawler would and compare the raw HTML with the rendered result. Content, links and metadata should not depend on late JavaScript.

5. Is it fast and stable?

Look at Core Web Vitals: LCP, CLS and INP, using field data where available. Find the cause, such as oversized images, render-blocking scripts or layout shifts, rather than only reporting the score.

6. Are titles, headings and metadata sound?

Check for missing, duplicate or truncated titles and descriptions, and for exactly one clear H1 per page.

7. Is structured data valid and honest?

Validate schema and make sure it matches what users see. Common wins are Organization, Product, Article, FAQ and Breadcrumb markup.

8. International setup

If you have several languages or regions, verify hreflang, canonicals and a sensible URL structure.

9. Turn findings into a plan

Rank issues by impact and effort, write developer-ready briefs with example URLs, and agree how success will be measured.

FAQ

How often should I run a technical SEO audit?

A full audit once or twice a year, plus monitoring in between. Also audit before a migration, a redesign or a platform change.

Which tools do I need?

At minimum Google Search Console and a crawler such as Screaming Frog or Sitebulb. GA4 and PageSpeed data complete the picture.
